What Does SB Mean in Text and on Snapchat?
SB in text, especially on Snapchat, usually means "snap back," as in "send me a snap in return." It also shows up as short for "somebody," like "sb tell me what the homework is." So what does SB mean in text? On Snap, it's a request for a reply snap. In a regular message, it's often just "somebody."
If "sb" requests are a big part of why you open Snapchat fifty times a day, that's worth knowing. Check my brainrot to see how much of that is reflex.
What SB means in text
| Meaning | Where | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Snap back | Snapchat captions and chats | "sb 😜" on a selfie |
| Somebody | Any chat | "sb please send the notes" |
| SB for SB | Snapchat, IG | Trade: I snap you, you snap me |
"Snap back" on Snapchat
This is the main one. If someone sends you a snap with "sb" on it, they want one back. It's the snap version of "your turn." Snapchat streaks run on this kind of back-and-forth, so you'll see "sb" constantly in streak snaps.
"Somebody"
In ordinary texting, "sb" is often just a lazy "somebody":
"sb explain the math homework I'm lost"
"SB for SB"
On Snapchat and sometimes Instagram, "sb for sb" means "snap back for snap back," a trade where both people send snaps. It's often used by people looking to grow streaks or add new contacts. Be careful who you do this with.
Examples of SB in real texts
A morning streak snap:
A blurry pic of a ceiling captioned "sb 🔥"
After a snap of your lunch:
"that looks so good sb what are you eating"
Group chat, school:
"sb tell me if we have a quiz tomorrow"
Uni or college halls (or first year, UK):
"sb please bring a speaker to the kitchen tonight"
What does SB mean in text from a guy?
What does SB mean in text from a guy? Usually snap back. If a guy sends a selfie with "sb," he wants a snap in return, which can be friendly or flirty depending on how well you know him. You decide what you send back. A pic of your dog counts.
What does SB mean in text from a girl?
Same thing. "sb" from a girl on Snap is a request for a snap back. In a group chat, "sb" from anyone is more likely "somebody."
How to reply to SB
You never have to snap back. But if you want to:
- Keep it low-effort: snap whatever's in front of you – a wall, your desk, your feet. That's what most streak snaps are anyway.
- Make it fun: a funny face, your pet, a filter.
- Add a word: "bored in class" or "at work till 9."
- Turn it into a chat: "sb but also how was your test??"
If it's "somebody" in a group chat, just answer the question if you know it.
When you don't want to snap back
- Ignore it. Streaks are not contracts.
- Send a text instead: "can't snap rn, in class."
- If someone's pushy about it, especially a stranger or someone asking for anything you're not comfortable with, block and report. You don't owe anyone a snap.
Snap-back culture is designed to keep you opening the app. It's hard to notice how many times a day a single "sb" pulls you in, and harder to judge whether you're choosing it. Brainrot Test asks seventeen quick questions about what you actually do when you pick up your phone and gives you a score from 0 to 100, plus one two-minute drill a day. Check my brainrot
